8 properties of beeswax that you should know.

Beeswax hasmany beneficial properties, some not so well known. It´s a natural substance with a wide variety of uses and applications. Thanks to these qualities, it is why it is used in various industries and is essential for the economy, especially in small communities.

You can find beeswax of lighter or darker colors which can vary depending on its purity or filtering method. Did you know that it takes about 5 kilos of honey to produce half a kilo of wax?

These are the main properties of beeswax:

  • It´s natural

Wax is the material that bees use to build their nests, they secrete it as liquid through their wax glands. Upon contact with air, the wax hardens and forms small flakes of wax on the bottom of the bee. With them they build the hexagonal alveoli of their combs where they keep honey and pollen.

  • It´s antibacterial

Like honey, beeswax has antibacterial properties that help reduce the risk of contamination, which is why it is an ingredient so widely used in natural cosmetics.

  • It´s antifungal

Beeswax is also believed to have antifungal properties that prevent the growth of yeast and other fungi.

  • It´s edible

With this we do not mean that it is good to eat it, but it is not toxic if ingested and that is why it can be applied in products that are in contact with our skin or our food.

  • It doesn´t go off

Beeswax contains a natural substance called propolis, perhaps it sounds familiar to you because grandmothers recommend it to treat allergies or a sore throat. Propolis has antiseptic qualities that help protect the hive, and keep the wax in good condition over time.

  • It´s waterproof

It has been used throughout history as a sealant or waterproofing agent, if it is applied hot on a fabric it seeps into the fibers and blocks the passage of water. That is why it is the main ingredient in our reusable wraps.

  • It’s moisturizing

Since it helps retain moisture, it is a very common substance in lotions, ointments and balms, for example for dry lips or body creams.

  • Doesn’t emit toxic fumes

Unlike candles made with paraffin (a petroleum distillate), beeswax candles release negative ions when burned, helping to purify the air. Also, as they smell good naturally, it is not necessary to add any artificial perfume.

Do you know any other property? Beeswax is an excellent ingredient to use in different products, whether they are craft candles, skin care products or to store food.

Why use beeswax to preserve food?

We use it as the main ingredient in our wraps because thanks to its antifungal and antibacterial qualities, food is kept safe from germs and bacteria.

Due to its impermeability, the cotton fabric will keep moisture and air out but will trap the natural moisture from the food, and most importantly: it does not contain toxic or chemicals, making it an excellent alternative to plastic to have in our kitchen.
